"Touch is one of the most powerful gifts we can give as human beings."
Having worked in various fields of medicine, I began my career as a charge nurse specializing in rehabilitating both adolescents and adult patients that had suffered brain and spinal cord injuries. I also performed private nursing for terminal cancer patients - a very rewarding but difficult experience. By working with this special group of people, I learned how powerful a tool human touch could be.
In 1984, I was involved in a near fatal car accident. I suffered severe injuries to my chest, back and pelvis. Ironically, I had now become the patient. Even with my extensive nursing background, I struggled to find a way to deal with the excruciating pain. Due to the severity of my fractures, mobility was extremely difficult as was breathing. Needless to say, rehab was long and grueling and through it, I leaned I also needed to deal with the shock of what happened along with the reality of my new physical challenges. Not wanting to become addicted to pain medications, I started my quest to find alternative solutions. This also began my spiritual journey - to have been so close to death and return. Why was I still here? What was my purpose?
Through all my set-backs, I was blessed to find a wonderful chiropractor and physical therapist who introduced me to Cranialsacral Therapy, Myofascial Release, Reiki and Massage. Encouraged and impressed, curious and determined, I set out to learn all I could. I began working for my physical therapist and started taking weekend seminars. This was also when I began my studies and training in Reiki. Ultimately I became his right hand. Working with patients this way was very rewarding for me as I realized my hands were my instrument, my gift. Utilizing these treatment modalities, with great success I began working with handicapped children in residential treatment programs.
At the encouragement of my physical therapist (and now friend), I enrolled in school to pursue my license in massage. Once there, I was very fortunate to have an incredible sports massage instructor and business mentor. We bonded instantly and immediately after graduation, she invited me to work with her.
Rosalie Dunn, Founder of Westport Therapeutic, and I have now worked together for over 15 years.
